Victorian Slum House

WOW, I thought that my times in my upstate Ny home were rough with no furnace, with having to bail the septic weekly every winter, to be without a working toilet for over 2 years, contracting Beaver Fever, and so many other calamities that befell us, but it was a picnic compared to these conditions. We had a comfortable bed, we were cold all winter but we had shelter and food. So much to be thankful for. If you can watch this and see what ancestors had to go through starting in 1860, it is worthwhile.
Thank you to Jeannie  for the recommendation.. Wow..
If this doesn't make all of us appreciate what we have, then maybe living like this or like I did for a while would change that pretty quick. LOL.

The 30 Grilled Sandwiches

Lordamercy, I fell asleep long enough to dream and I was a wife again. It was the big game and the house was purentee full of rowdy cowboys,  and their wives and children. I made the mistake of asking one of the kids if they wanted a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, then took that mistake to the big TV room where all the people were watching the game,  and asked if they wanted one.
Thirty hands went up,  and with a smile I traipsed to the kitchen in my high heels and said, "I am gonna need an apron!" LOL. I told every one there would be a slight delay while more sourdough, Ham and Cheese were bought.
Then I fired up a griddle pan and two small ones on the stove. I made 15 of them suckers at a time. With my hair slightly askew, I delivered all 30 grilled ham and cheese sandwiches to the gang with paper plates, a napkin and a smile.. Who says that my serving days as a Skating Car Hop at A&W Drive In didn't pay off? 😂😁

On Being In Love

May 23 2013
Good early morning sisters and brothers. I was talking about love to some friends yesterday. I have written about love many times over the past few years and wanted to share some of how that came about for me.. Here is an entry that changed my life.. I love you, Kimmee
PS. My oldest daughter took this shot a while ago long before Kamama was born. Prophetic for sure...
Falling In Love
Thursday, December 10, 2009
I was reminded this morning of the day that I fell in love..I was on a dating site and someone asked me if I had fallen in love, and I replied, Sort of....
It was over at the other house that had the lake, and I was walking down the path to the lake for my morning meditation. As I got about half way there, I noticed the perfect tree reflected in the water and the thought found me, that I want to find that perfect mirror image of myself to love.
I ran back home to get my camera to capture the picture and got as close to the waters edge as I could, to get that perfect shot..
I took the shot, and then something made me look down, and there reflected in the water was the perfect mirror image of someone to love. Myself..
Tears flooded my eyes that day, and I still tear up thinking about it all this time later, because I changed that day. I was able to see that I was indeed lovable, that I was the perfect person to love, and that I deserved all that love that I give others all the time.
It made a huge difference in my life that day, and my wish is for each of you to find that perfect mirror image of yourself to love.. When that day came for me it brought me such peace.. I wish that for each of you... Love to all, Kimmee

Love Is The Answer

It seems appropriate and yet so sad that this comes up on my timeline today following yet another Terrorist attack, this time in Manchester.
I keep praying for unity for our World and I will continue to pray that one day our children will know peace.
Hold your loved ones close. Tomorrow is not guaranteed, today will be a memory soon. Make Your world as bright as you can. I am so blessed in my life and I don't take that life for granted. Thank you all for being here. Continue spreading love around and continue praying for peace and for each other. Love to all, Kimmee

(Warning, wordy post)
Lord, it is such a beautiful start to the day and while watching the squirrels scurrying here and there, and listening to the bird song, it is hard to think that anything could be wrong in the world.
Then my eyes hit a news byline that says things like Riots going on in Cleveland after that verdict, massive earthquakes in Nepal, and Isis executes mass women and children. The realities of what is going on in other places hits my spirit like a brick and I feel humbled to be safe in my world.
But not every one is safe where they live. Sometime, just the color of your skin will dictate how your day is going to go.
We think we have come so far in our country, that we are so civilized but that is far from the truth.
We have rampant prejudice in the world. It is not only here but the headlines the past few months show us with certainty that we treat people differently in the USA based on the color of your skin.
It is not a new thing. When many or our ancestors came to this country on those first ships, the land was inhabited by a beautiful free people.
They had skin of bronze, long dark hair with feathered decorations and they hunted and gathered what they needed, always giving thanks for what they were given.
These beautiful people that had never seen anything but themselves contracted diseases that the White men brought, they were killed if they resisted the efforts of the White man expansion efforts, and they were treated as less than animals as time went on.
These once proud men and women who took care of the land, always replenished the resources that The Creator provided were put into slavery, were cheated out of their land, were a small soft shoe step away from annihilation.
We could complain about the state of affairs or we could do something about it. We could feed the hungry, like that little boy of 5 that saw a man and questioned his mom about him. The innocent mind of a 5 year old did not know what homelessness meant and when told, he thought of a way to fix what he saw.
The Racial differences that we are seeing in our country seem so monumental that people wonder if we were ever breach the gulf, but I am here to tell you we can.
It will start with the children being exposed to children unlike themselves.
My daddy was a Southern man, born and bred, but there was not a shred of racial inequality in his speech or manner. As I watched him treat the black man selling peanuts like his best friend, I gained a valuable insight to humans.
WE ARE ALL THE SAME....
Red, yellow, black, white, gay, straight, transgender or any other difference that we can come up with. Because beneath that skin, beats a heart and blood flows to that heart which is life.
Start being an example to the youth of America today. If you are prejudiced and can recognize it, change it.
If you don't have any black friends, change it..
If you have a complaint, come up with a solution. Ghandi said.. Be the change you seek..
I love you all so much.. I believe that love can change the world. I will keep on believing as we grow.. Kamama

Mothers day letter from My oldest daughter

Mom, through all you years, you always made me feel as though I was the most important thing in your life. Growing up, I thought that it was us against the world. You have always loved me unconditionally, even when I was difficult to tolerate. You took me all over the world, and taught me valuable life lessons. You always encouraged me to be who I want to be and love whom ever I choose. You gave me the foundation to become a strong, independent woman, and the confidence to expect more out of life. You have always encouraged me to ask questions and dig deeper into myself for answers. I am eternally grateful to be your daughter.

Remembrances of My Mother

Today's thankful post is about my Mother. I don't talk about her a lot and I haven't thanked her as much as I should. I want to thank her today because she gave life to me.
My Mom was a girl of 13 the first time she caught my Dad's 25 year old eyes. I think of that today and I shudder but this was 1937 and people thought differently about courtship and marriage. I know that they courted for 3 years and he wrote her some very poignant letters that my sister has in her possession.
There is no denying that he fell in love with her. I don't know how she felt about him, but he was tall and good looking so she may have been dazzled by him, thinking that would bring a better life.
At age 16,on a sunny day on June 22nd  of 1940, they married. The next year the children started to come and they did not stop until 1955 when there were 6 of us.
In my very young years, my parents became legally separated and the children were left with Daddy. This was the first time I felt abandonment, and it happened again and again as she would come and go a few times a year. Of course at that age I did not understand but as I grew up, I understood perfectly. She did the only thing that she could do, in that day.
There were few opportunities for Women. Independently owning a home or car was not widely done. If you married, every thing was in your husbands' name and when she left, it was with very little. ( I think of that as very brave today)
There were some happy memories of her coming when I was really small. I can still see her making her mouth watering sugar cookies in the old burl flour bowl. She mixed everything by hand without a recipe and them dropped them on the cookie sheet to cook. She put sugar on them about half way through the baking process and they were literally melt in your mouth good. I tried for years to duplicate them but it took her granddaughter, my oldest, to do that. The secret turned out to be Lemon and Vanilla flavoring in them.. LOL. My daughter tried several combinations until she came upon the right one, but she can make those cookies and they take me back to 5 years old in one bite:-)
She made me flour sack dresses when I was small and she made some pretty awesome bread pudding.
She couldn't swim a lick but she could float on her back like a champ. When we would go to Munson, we would be swimming and she would lie on her back with her toes sticking out of the water and float all over the lake. I used to watch her and try to emulate it, but I could not. My toes would sink or I would have to paddle to keep afloat, but not her. She could cross her arms and legs if she wanted and float all day.
She loved country music and if she was home, the record player was aplayin. Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Hank Locklin.. Hmmmm.. She sure liked Hanks. There were also the McReynolds boys, Lester Flat and Earl Scruggs, Faron Young, Ernest Tubb, and the deep baritone of Tennessee Ernie Ford singing " You load sixteen tons and what do you get?" So many great singers of that day that I can not say them all. She loved hearing them sing and I do too.
She loved Church too. Not many remember that, but she loved the Lord. She took us to Ebenezer when we were little and I will always be grateful for that. It gave me a foundation of knowing that there is something greater than me.
Now I will get to the thankful part. I harbored resentment and an unforgiving heart toward my Mother for many years, because I had no understanding as a child of why I could not be with her. I know now that she left us with Daddy, because she knew we would have a home and food and schooling. With her vagabond existence, it would have been impossible to provide for us.
That is why I have the greatest empathy for someone giving up a child. If you have a heart, that is not done lightly. It is done because you love that child more than you do yourself. And that means that she loved us, more than she loved herself. When I realized that, forgiveness was in my heart for her and for me harboring, any less than stellar, thoughts about what my life had been.
I can tell you that forgiveness is, bar none, the greatest gift that you can give yourself. When you forgive, it releases it from your heart and mind and it flies away from you, leaving you free of its power.
So, today I thank my Mom, Blanch Beatrice Morris, for giving me some of her sweet spirit. For cooking when she was home, for letting me do her hair, for coming back to see us every now and again and for trying to be a good Mom.
If you have your Mom, forgive her and thank her for giving life to you. If you don't, pray your thanks to her.
All my love, Kimmee
ps.. I have a few material things that I cherish from my Mom. One is a tapestry of the Last Supper. I don't have it out at present to photograph for you. I do have my prized dish from her that my younger sister gave me, and I have her cast iron Skillet that my older sister gave me. I remember as a child her taking it out into the sand to clean it. I don't think soap ever touched her beloved skillet and it doesn't stick today, cause I take care of it. Thank you Mom and my Sisters....

Lessons From Life

Good Morning sweet friends, (wordy entry)
I had such a surprise when I went out to the pond this morning. I was out to welcome in the day and I saw a blue heron on the far shore. As I got a bit closer I saw the white Egret closer to me. I crept closer and then I saw the miraculous site of the two birds in the picture with the duck. What a shot. This doesn't happen all the time and it was such a gift to see them today. As I looked more closely at the other side, I saw a baby and I sighed.
This is the lesson from 2008...
I took my walk today and the world was quiet except for an occasional birdsong, telling me to keep moving forward, when I would so love to step back. To retreat into my aloneness where I feel most safe, but I can not. I am a new creature now and strong. Strength continues to move forward into the now and tomorrow.
Fear is a strange mistress. It can paralyze, or it can motivate. A wise man once told me that "there is no bravery in the absence of fear" and I believe that.
I strolled to what is left of my beloved lake this morning. Closed my eyes and sought peace. Slowed my breathing and listened to my heart beating within my chest. Alive and strong.... That is what I have become on this journey. Alive and Strong... That is my gift for the many nights I cried alone in my pain. That is the gift for the many holes I stepped in along the way to becoming who I am.... That is the gift for any of us that struggle to heal our hearts and rise again......
As I closed my eyes and thought of what got me to where I am and the gratefulness I feel each day for that, something told me to open my eyes.. I had been there for 10 minutes with my eyes closed. I had not heard anything fly in and yet when I opened my eyes, the small heron was there. Watching me and me watching him..... This was the child, a little older now, growing with life’s lessons and becoming an adult with new eyes.. And that was me, an adult , becoming as a child, with wonder for all things, and with thankfulness in my heart for them... My heart is pure, full of love and light, able to love all things, able to play with the box and see the gift in that..... And I am so thankful.. The tears filled my eyes as I watched the child play in the water and thought of me playing in the water as I do, when it is within my reach, or when it rains on me...
May we all become as children. Able to forgive hurts and move on.. Able to see the wonder in all things as it should be each day..... Able to love without past hurts binding us, and keeping us prisoner..... Able to walk forward into each day and think what wonderful thing will happen to us today..... Able to hope, dream, and grow with the lessons of that new life..
Find your heron today and see one thing today as a child..
Take a look at the photos and feel the healing power of nature as I feel it everyday.. Sending you all love and light today, Kimmee
