Thankful The Rain Came

Today, I think that a lot of us are thankful. The rain was coming down like gangbusters last night and every now and then, we got a huge burst of thunder..
Every time that happens, I always think of Daddy saying, "God's bowling", and when it would rain with the sun still out he would say "The Devil is beating his wife." I have no idea where these old sayings came from but I can imagine that they are from the old country, passed down for generations.
My next thought were our farmers. They needed this rain. I wonder how many of us when we go to the supermarket to shop, thank the farmers?
Without them, no produce would be in the vegetable aisle.
That gallon of milk that you need with your morning cereal, would not be there.
That sweet potato pie that your dear ole Aunt made yesterday, would be a figment of your imagination without the farmers.
I know my own Daddy worked in the sawmill from sun up to almost sun down, then would come home and tend the garden that fed us. The boys helped tend the animals and we gathered eggs for tomorrow's breakfast.
I don't think that I thanked my Daddy enough for all the hard work he did or how many times he must have been tired or ached but I never heard him say anything about it. His reward was to get up the next day and do it again, every day.
So today, thank a farmer because Lord knows they deserve it. If you have ever worked a farm, it is a pretty thankless task. Farmers do that because they love it and their Daddy loved it and often their Granddaddy loved it.
My Niece is married to a farmer and she is a farmers wife. That is another special breed of person. My family is full of those, thank God.. Love to all, Kimmee

Freedom

Hi my dear family and friends,
It is so hard to come up with one thing to be thankful for today so here is my list.. Please feel free to add your own.. Merry Christmas dear hearts of mine, Kimmee
I am thankful for freedom.. Even though some of us get weird looks when we go out, we can dress how we want, have our hair the color we want, and we can speak our minds without being drawn and quartered. Many men and women have died for us to have that right. Today is Pearl Harbor Day.. God Bless all of those who serve and all of those that lost their lives that day.
I am thankful for Teachers. If it weren't for schooling, I would not have met the most wonderful teacher in the world, Miss Stella Walker. She taught me so many things about how to treat others and she gave me a sense of self in the kindest way possible. We are blessed to have selfless souls still willing to teach our children in this day and age, because it is a thankless, dangerous task at times. God Bless the Teachers and Educators who still care...
I am thankful for food and water.. We sometimes forget in this country that food and water are a given, most of the time. Unless we are homeless, hungry, or cold, we tend to forget just what a blessing it is to have a plate of food in front of us, anytime we choose.
I went through a really rough period a few times in the past 11 years and at times, I was hungry. Every Time, God sent an Angel to feed me and give me all the things I needed. I am so thankful for the people that helped me get by, when I needed it most.. God bless all those Angels lurking behind the scenes to bring joy where it is most needed.. If you know someone in need, take them a meal or donate a toy and become an Angel for someone else.
I am incredibly thankful for my children. I would not have made it through my life without them. I was blessed with 3 very different, amazing children and now have two wonderful grandchildren. They are my heart and spirit each day.
They care for me, make me laugh, help me to remember things that I may have placed aside, and they give me hope for tomorrow.
God bless all of the people in my life that show caring and love every day. It is harder to be positive than it is to be negative. I consciously make a choice to try and share a smile each day. I fail miserably sometimes, but the reward is in the effort.
Much love to you all. May your lives be blessed as mine has been by having you all in it.... Love, Kimmee

Statues of Geese

Sometimes early in the morning before I get my eyes adjusted to being awake, the geese look like statues. LOL.
I hope that this morning will be all that you wish it to be and that tomorrow will be as well!
I am counting my blessings this year. Among them are my family and friends. The road I have been on the past 8 years has taken me places I never thought it would. We have expectations of where we are going and then the road turns for us.
The road turned for me last year when I faced homelessness and again this year when I faced it again.
I had worked most of my adult life, buying my home in upstate NY, educating and taking care of my children, and then illness roared its ugly head into my life. My life changed so much I hardly had time to adjust but I tried not to let life defeat me.
It wasn't easy to wear a smile some of the time but I always remembered what Daddy said, when we complained of tough meat. He said, it would be tougher without, and he was right.
Life could have been easier if I had been able to continue working as a Nurse and retired like I had planned at 55.
But who wants something easily gained?
The life I was given was rewarding and challenging. It kept me always searching and seeking higher ground. It made me grow as a being and made me get rid of things that kept me bound.
It was hard to look at illness as a gift but it has turned out to be just that.
My friend Joan Schaublin gave me something a bit ago called "Sitting with Discomfort" by Jeff Foster and I realized that was what I have been doing most of my life. And I have gained the gifts of that for my life.
Don't run away from hardships. They create who we are. They did it for our parents, our grandparents, and great grandparents.
I just wanted to thank those friends that have walked with me, cried with me, and laughed with me the past few years. I could not have known I would need you; but when I did, you were there.
All my love, Kimmee

Chocolate Covered Cherry Christmas

Morning dear friends,
I casually mentioned to my daughter in law that I used to love chocolate covered cherries at Christmas but that it had been a long time since I had them and this was waiting for me when I got up to have my coffee this morning! What a sweetheart she is..
I am ashamed to say I have already opened the box, but just barely.. LOL. Thank you so much my chosen daughter.
I hope that everyone's day starts off with such joy... Love you all, Kimmee

The DePeyster Hardships

(Warning.. Long)
I was thinking about the home I had in upstate NY tonight and what a miracle it was that any of us survived. I am going to share a little bit of it with you all, but keep in mind this is only a fraction of what it took to live there, for so long. I don't think my children will ever forgive me and I am glad that it is over.
I talked a little bit about the move from Ca. to Ny in one of the previous thankfulness writings and I am going to continue some of that. The first night there, Dec 8th, I begged to go back to Ca. We did not have any of our furniture and were sleeping on the floors with blankets when something bit me on my finger. The lights were not on so I could not see what it was. I uprooted myself and the kids to the kitchen where I kept the lights turned on all night long.
2nd night.. Our truck had arrived nearing the end of the day and we pulled off our mattresses to put on the floor, hoping to deter the rats and mice that inhabited the house. We were the interlopers and they were not going down without a fight. We had settled in and in the wee hours of the morning, the furnace belched black smoke into the house and the only thing we could do was plan the funeral. Everything was covered in smoke, even our faces and noses.
No one had a job yet, so it was not like we had the thousands of dollars to put a new one in and the duct system it needed. So we bundled up in the packing blankets and made it through another night. I was so worried at times that the blankets were so heavy that they would suffocate my 4 year old daughter and I prayed like nobody's business.
The only thing we could do was buy a small wood stove for 100 dollars and start cutting wood on the land with a handsaw. We chopped them down with an ax, then carried them out over our shoulders to finish processing them, for the wood stove. We did not know where to buy wood or that a sawmill was less than a mile down the road. Of course, we had no money for wood anyway.
We managed to unpack the truck and get enough wood to use during the night but we froze during the day. It was in the 30's but at least it was above zero. I found a job at a little computer company in early January and we had a small income but the temperatures dropped below zero in Jan. This made the pump freeze and we did not have money to fix it or even know what was wrong with it.
For three weeks we drank water by melting ice on the little wood stove. Little did we know that the beaver inhabited the small pond and all of us contracted Beaver Fever in varying degrees of illness. I got it the worst and lost 20 lbs in 9 days. I was already so thin and my daughter told me later, I looked like death warmed over, with my bones sticking out every where. None of us went to the doctor.
Since I am writing this, you know that I survived the onslaught of fluids leaving my body and the hallucinations that followed from being without food and water. The only reason that any of us made it, was an Angel on our shoulders. It was the first of many times that we were protected there.
That same year, I became pregnant at age 38 and then when I was 4 months pregnant I was laid off and then a month later, my husband was. We survived so many trials in that home and with each one, we made it through.
When I look back on it and read those journal entries, I don't know how any of us survived.
My baby at 2 yrs old contracted Whooping cough and for a month, I rocked him and prayed. He would not have gotten it but the Amish were fascinated with us and stopped by often to talk to my husband who they called Samson from him toting 300 lb trees out of the woods over his shoulder. They do not immunize and my son was allergic to the pertussis part of the DPT and he got it from one of them. I thought for sure he would not make it but for a month, I rocked him all night and prayed. When he made it, I knew that I had to do something as far as work, because my husband was an alcoholic and he would not.
Thankfully during this time, I had a daughter that started Nursing school at 17 and she helped us by working, going to school and giving me some money each month so that we made it. As soon as she graduated, I started LPN school. It took two long years and when I finished that, I went right into RN school , worked 20 hours a week and took care of my 3 year old child when I could.
There were a few times I just knew that I wouldn't and I gave it up to God. One of them was on an icy bridge in Feb. right after my birthday. I was driving my Mustang in front of my husband who was in his Van. We had gone to get his Van because it had broken down again and we had to pick it up from the shop. I was going the speed limit and my car hit black ice on the bridge. I fishtailed in the ice back and forth across the bridge. Everything was in slow motion. I reacted automatically to turn the wheel against the skid and I kept it on the bridge. There was a stopped vehicle across the bridge and they watched this horror unfold toward them and my husband behind me, did also. He told me when we got home, that he did not think I was going to make it.
I never even stopped the car. I just kept driving to get home. Past the shocked faces of the two men on the side and past another car that did not make it on the bridge, although I did not know that at the time. One car was already in the water and yet I made it across and home. Tell me that miracles do not exist and I will tell you that they do. I am the living embodiment of that. I was sick all day from the adrenaline that flooded my body but I was alive.
I have shared parts of my story with some people before, at church and with my sister. I am asked how do I think that we survived so many things that would have killed others? I always answer, " I had a praying sister" and I truly believe that with all my heart.
Some of us are meant to live and some of us to die. We never know which one we are slated to do, until it happens.
I lived and when you are given that opportunity to live, you feel like it is for a purpose. I have been educated for my purpose, as each of us are and one day we find it..
Mine is to tell my story, share my hardships, share my triumphs. It may impact others and it may only impact myself. But the words tumble out of me and I can't stop them, so I write them down and sometimes I feel led to share them with others.
Today is one of those times. All of us suffer hardships. Some of us are ill. Some of us don't have jobs. Some of us don't have loved ones in our lives, but there is always something to be thankful for. If you are reading this, you are alive. That is the greatest reason to be thankful because with life all things are possible. Life is fluid and if we give it but a moment, it will change. Be bold, be brave and embrace life. We only get one shot at it and sometimes that is cut short.
It may seem like we are alone at times, but someone is always praying and someone is always watching. Love always, Kimmee

The Traveler

This morning I want to talk about travel.. I have done a lot of it in my life and I am thankful for that opportunity.
I don't recommend getting married at 17 but if you are going to, marry a military guy because you get to travel. lol.
The first travel that I was able to do was with Daddy and my sister Donna, when I was 16. I had my new banana yellow Mustang and Daddy had a trip to go on, needing to inspect the Brunswick Factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Alger Sullivan delivered the wood for the floors and Daddy kept the machinery going that made this happen.
I could really do an entire story about each trip we took but today I am going to hit the highlights. I never knew that travel and exposure to new ways of life would impact me so much but it did and it has. When we grow up in a "bubble" so to speak, we are sometimes afraid of different cultures or ethnicity, but I am not. So here begins the travel of Kimmee..
First to the big city of Grand Rapids streets
Then to Holland to gather some treats
Slowly back home through Nashville way
Daddy in the back seat footing the pay
Next came marriage and moving to Milton
Twasn't long before the flowers were wiltin
Onto to San Diego, the land of curvy brunettes
The Zoo, Wild Animal Park and birth of my own dark haired beauty ( Ok, I know that doesn't rhyme lol)
From there to Okinawa via Fairbanks and Polar Bears
Landing in the tropics and wanting to shave off my hair
The Ryukuan People, so fascinating and kind
The Koi Fish feeding ponds, so sublime
Back for a visit via Hawaii to home
The Land of Don Ho and beautiful songs
The fragrance of orchids and peaceful people that touched
My heart and my mind in acceptance, so much
A visit to Sunnyvale, the in laws retreat
Then back to Okinawa , luggage at my feet
One more trip home, on a C5 airplane
You haven't lived til you have flown backwards and watched the passengers complain
A move to San Jose then became the norm
A Job, a new man, I had entered the storm
I settled a bit, but traveled home
My Dad passed and my future felt blown
A mid life crisis, an earthquake that made
Us move to Upstate and that made us pay
A long time in snow, no water, lessons learned
We come in alone but aging we earn
Illness overtakes me, a move to the South
Husband deserts me , I'm no longer a Mouse
13 moves in the span of 11 years
Boxes and trucks, smiles and tears
Finally I am settled in a home with a pool
I think I am tugging on that jewel
The one that takes us home, to a land far away
The one that makes us reflect on all we have to say
Thank you for reading, for coming along with me
I love you, I mean it, that's all I can see........
Always, Kimmee

Thankfulness in Nature

My Thankfulness involves Nature today. A wonderful healing for my spirit always...
Back in 1982, I was looking around for a house to invest in for my old age and found an ad in the paper for one. I arranged to go back and stay in this little place for two weeks and I fell in love with the Amish, the area and the quaintness of the DePeyster Village where the house was.
I bought this house 3000 miles away from where I was living and by 1984 had sent money back to the renters for repairs and was looking forward to moving and getting settled in.
I am a Florida girl born and bred and had never experienced any REAL cold. LOL. I finally got a chance to move to my "dream" home a few years later in 1989. The 7.1 earthquake had happened in San Jose/San Francisco area where I had lived for a long time, and I though there is not a better time to move on out of here. LOL.
We arrived after an eventful 8 day journey with a 24 foot truck, two other pulled vehicles and what looked like a convoy moving from California to Upstate NY. The truck broke down only 50 miles from our destination on a cold day in December, with 3 feet of snow on the ground. The house was cold, dark, and empty as the renters had moved out a month prior to our getting home and the house was full of rodents trying to escape the winter cold.
We had such a hard start to our life there but my children were little troopers. The furnace blew up and black smoke invaded the home within a week of our arrival. The mice had to be extracted and they were hesitant to leave. LOL. The furnishings arrived a few days later and we were in!
Little did I know that the next 18 winters would be one of survival, many hardships, and tragedy as my marriage fell apart.
I have written these things down for my children but I don't think they will ever want to read about them. We lived them...
One upside to the move was the cemetery.. I have told you all what a nut I am about History and Genealogy and within a short time I discovered that my Kith and Kin were buried 1/4 mile from the very home I purchased. It was a discovery that made me sure I was in the right place at the right time.
I could write all day long about all the things I found while digging in the garden that made me know I was home. The dolls, the toys which included marbles, little metal trucks, a large 1900's wagon, and many medical bottles and such. Since I was a doll collector, a Nurse and loved old things, it made my day!
In the early crisp mornings before winter, I would go out to my picnic table and drink my coffee. I would have to bundle up because Thanksgiving was approaching and it was pretty nippy, but I wanted to see what ever nature wanted to show me.
One morning as I was sipping my coffee, out of the woods came a magnificent wild turkey followed by two females. He has his feather extended fully and was prancing around trying to attract one of both of the females. He danced and wiggled, flapped his majestic wings, and the females avoided him like he was the plague. I said to him, you are going to have to do better than that to get their attention and just then he did.
He started moving his head up and down in a ballet type move. At least it was as graceful and his wings seemed to sway up and down. It seemed like slow motion, it was so incredibly beautiful. I could not take my eyes off this amazing dance he performed for me and for the two other females of whom, he finally had their complete attention. My coffee grew cold as I and they wallowed in this magic moment. I have thought of this so many times over the years and have always prayed to be worthy of such a gift.
This was but one of the many magic moments that started my day as I sat at the picnic table or my thinking rock.
The house still stands today and a new family lives within its walls, but my spirit will linger I know, as long as it is there. I put down roots in those early mornings, in the rocks, in the trees and the over 200 bulbs that I planted around that place and it brings me comfort knowing that it lives somewhere..
I love you all so much and pray that thankfulness of Nature will heal and nourish you as it does me.... Always, Kimmee
